Doran Consulting Wins National Civil Engineering Award

Doran Consulting’s Simon Lamont, Anthony Carr, James Cochrane and Michael Murray celebrated success in winning the prestigious ICE National Communication Competition in Birmingham last week, beating 36 teams from all over the UK. The last time a team from NI won this award, was back in the 90’s, with the team headed up by MP and Belfast Lord Mayor Naomi Long

Run by the Institute of Civil Engineers the competition is aimed at under 35 year olds for developing good communication skills vital to success in today’s world of engineering. Based on the setting of a public meeting using a fictional scenario involving technical solutions, the social and the economic aspects of engineering work. Entrants had to prepare a consultation strategy, produce a public information leaflet and present their case in front of a live audience and panel of judges.

All aged under twenty six, the team of four from Doran Consulting were pitched against AECOM, Arup and Jacobs Babtie, all major global players in the world of engineering. Amidst that stiff competition, the judges agreed unanimously that it was Doran Consulting who deserved first prize in this prestigious competition.

The judges seemed impressed with our in-depth understanding over a wide range of engineering issues and presentation based on substance and good communication.

During the Tall Ships event you will be able to see the Nomadic sitting in Hamilton Dock, between 13th and 16th of August.

The historic SS Nomadic, a tender that ferried passengers to the doomed Titanic, has been moved back to Hamilton Graving Dock where she was built almost 100 years ago.

The dry dock is located in Belfast harbour where the SS Nomadic was built. It is 150 years old and a listed historic monument which has been out of commission for over 30 years.

Our brief is to make the dock operational again in preparation of the restoration of the Nomadic.
The project involves organising all statutory licenses with NIEA, the design of the dock gate and making the dock safe for the restoration team and volunteers to work on the Nomadic.

IStructE Centenary Awards (2008)

At the Institution of Structural Engineers dinner on 27 Feb 2008 Doran Consulting won the award for the prestigious award for best Community Structure. This was a very competitive section with 8 entries and we were the clear winners. Dr Paul Keown collected the award

The structure demonstrates a creative use of a wide range of structural skills in overcoming design challenges. The substructures include a grade 1 basement, constructed below the flood level of the adjacent river. A drained cavity approach was used to overcome this problem. The roof and upper levels of the structure had to facilitate the use of the building. This led to a requirement for long span virendeel girders supporting the roof and a very complex arrangement of steelwork to support the stage backdrops and lighting. The footbridge was designed to satisfy the client’s requirement for a light and elegant structure to enhance the environment around the site. The design of external retaining structures was also technically demanding on a very steeply sloping site, adjacent to the River Strule. The finished project has been widely accepted as a fine example of design excellence.

- Stroke is one of the top three causes of
death in the UK, along with cancer and
heart disease

- Stroke is a leading cause of adult disability
in the UK, with at least 300,000 people living
with moderate to severe disabilities as a result of stroke

- Stroke costs the economy £7 billion every year in health and social care costs

These startling facts underline why The Stroke Association is working hard to campaign for improved health and social care for stroke survivors and their families. The Association run campaigns on issues that affect stroke survivors and their families, so that they are highlighted amongst the public, the media, MPs and all the other people who make key decisions about health and social care.

Time for a Health Check!

Doran Consulting, NI’s largest independent firm of consulting engineers, took the initiative of employing the assistance of Heart Chest & Stroke to give their 96 employees a health check.

Stephen Lockwood, MD explained 'Staff are the lifeblood of any organisation and ours is no exception. By the very nature of our business many of our employees spend long hours on site, commute all around Ireland and frequently fly to various locations throughout the UK. In today's world of deadlines and compressed design programmes stress is inevitable.
We feel that bringing the health inspection right into the workplace gives staff the opportunity to check their blood pressure and cholesterol as well as discussing lifestyle and exercise, prevention always being better than cure.'

Health Promotion Nurse Lisa Rolston added 'A healthy workforce leads to less absenteeism and early retirement, giving employees more financial security. I consider the service we offer at Chest Heart & Stroke to be vital to the well being and prevention of serious illness to all workforces across Northern Ireland.'

Pictured here having her blood pressure checked is Dawn Burrows, a Drawing Technician with Doran Consulting. Dawn also spends a lot of time surveying on site. A large crowd, including Stakeholders, Council Members, Local Politicians and the Design Team from Doran Consulting, gathered in the Old Courthouse, Lifford for the launch of the £1.3 million project which will see the restoration of part of the old Strabane Canal and River Access facilities in Lifford. The Strabane Lifford Development Commission (SLDC) is overseeing the project which will comprise the restoration of over one and half miles of the Strabane Canal and two historic locks.

Doran Consulting were appointed by SDLC in 2005 after competitive tender to act as Lead Consultant. The scope of our work involves making the Planning Applications, detailed design, tendering and contract administration of the works to restore navigation to the canal. It is expected that work on site will begin in late summer 2006.

After opening in 1792 to increase the accessibility of both Strabane and Lifford to world markets, the canal enjoyed almost two centuries of operation before falling into disuse in 1962. The current project aims to restore the waterway as well as the development of additional facilities. It is envisaged that the project will stimulate tourism and provide economic and social benefits within the area.

Castlederg WwTW news

The project team of Severn Trent Services, Williams Industrial Services, BSG Civil Engineering, Doran Consulting and Northern Ireland Water Service successfully installed and commissioned the first Fluidyne ISAM process in Western Europe at Castlederg Waste Water Treatment Works.

The ISAM process is significant in that it was installed with the benefit of design and operating experience gained utilising similar technology from Fluidyne, installed and commissioned by Williams Industrial Services on several other Northern Ireland Water Service Waste Water treatment works. Importantly the ISAM process installed is providing, as expected, very attractive operational cost savings in power consumption and sludge production. The plant is also delivering compliance on treated effluent standards and operates automatically with minimal operator intervention.

The ISAM process comprises very few moving parts with a series of simple tanks operating in an anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic sequence to first decompose solids to soluble compounds that are then readily oxidised in the aerobic stage of the process. The result is a process that recovers oxygen reducing power costs and yields low levels of sludge.

The construction of the new replacement abstraction pumping station was procured via the 'Design and Construct' route. The pumping station is designed to transfer flows of up to 40Ml/day from the River Bann at Castleroe, Coleraine to Ballinress Impounding Reservoir for treatment at Ballinress WTW prior to supply to the Coleraine area.

The new intake from the River Bann allows river water through to the new duty/standby 6mm band screens. The design is based on a dry well/wet well configuration with the four high lift pumps protected by twin surge tanks.

Bridging the Gap - Victoria Park Bridge

Doran Consulting, Northern Ireland's largest independent civil and structural engineers have just erected a 25 metre long (82 feet - length of two flat bed lorries) bridge in Victoria Park Belfast. Like many of today's civil engineering feats the bridge simply didn't appear overnight. Although it was fabricated in Carrickfergus, it needed to be transferred to Portadown for painting and then transported back to Victoria Park for final erection at 4am on Saturday 1st October. It isn't everyday we see such a construction traveling on our roads so for safety reasons the journey between Portadown and Belfast had to take place in daylight hours during off peak drive time. By contrast, because of the park's close proximity to the Belfast City Airport, the actual lift and set down over the water could only occur in the middle of the night when there was absolutely no chance of any aircraft in the nearby skies.

Part of the park's heritage the old bridge provided pedestrian and grounds maintenance access to the island and football pitches since the 1920s. John Spence of Doran Consulting who was asked if he thought this new bridge would last another eighty five years, responded 'This bridge is made of high quality steel with a state of the art corrosion protection system and was constructed under quality controlled conditions so I would like to think with proper maintenance it has a lifespan of at least 100 years'.

Victoria Park nestles on the Sydenham side of Belfast Lough in East Belfast. For decades visitors have walked by the lakeside through mature woodland, enjoying the swans, geese, ducks and migrating waders. The mudflats which form part of the Belfast Lough Area of Special Scientific Interest are home to the migrating waders, who, when ringed, have been recorded as far away as the Baltic Sea and Scandanavia. To enjoy the new bridge and the wildlife at Victoria Park enter by Park Avenue off the Holywood Road, Belfast.
