London Luton Airport

Awarded as a Design & Build Contract, this project consisted of a new 3-storey, 200m long departures/ arrivals pier, new Immigration Building and new Arrivals Building. The new pier was designed and constructed using structural steelwork frames with reinforced concrete stairwells and lift shafts. The ancillary buildings, each comprising of approximately 4,000m² of floor area, were constructed using a structural steelwork frame.

As the works were being carried out within a working airport, phased construction was necessary to maintain the safe flow of passengers at all times. Part of the scheme involved the construction of a 7,000m² retail area within a previously unused space in the existing terminal building. This work involved major internal structural alterations and the construction of a new mezzanine area, all requiring erection of steelwork within the existing building. In order to link this retail area to the adjacent new buildings, major bridge links were necessary.
