Medical Biology Teaching Centre (MBC), Queen's University Belfast

This project comprised the construction of an internal atrium space to link the original Medical Biology Centre tower block to new teaching facilities which include a main theatre and a classroom block.

The integration of old and new provided many engineering challenges particularly at substructure level as the existing tower had a one storey basement.

The building was constructed with a reinforced concrete frame which was chosen to reduce acoustic transfer between spaces. The roof, which included a glazed roof light to bring natural light into the internal spaces, was formed in structural steel.
