Ashby Building Refurbishment, Queen’s University Belfast

The Ashby Building on the Stranmillis Road houses QUB’s School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Doran Consulting was commissioned by Queen’s University to provide civil and structural engineering design advice and site supervision services for the refurbishment of the Ashby tower and laboratory block.

The works were completed in 3 phases and involved the refurbishment of all the lecture theatres, office spaces and laboratories and the provision of new Mechanical and Electrical services throughout the building.

Quite significant structural alterations were required to accommodate these works, including the removal of various sections of reinforced concrete walling and the formation of various openings through existing concrete floors. The external glazing/ curtain walling to the building’s north staircase was also replaced over the entire height of the tower as part of the first phase of the works.

We were involved in all the phases from the concept stage through to completion, undertaking all the structural design.
