Fivemiletown WwTW, Co. Tyrone

Fivemiletown Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) is situated on the southern outskirts of the village of Fivemiletown, approximately 21km northeast of Enniskillen. Doran Consulting was initially commissioned by NI Water to undertake an Appraisal Study of the original percolating filter works to assess the potential options available to provide wastewater treatment for Fivemiletown that was capable of meeting the effluent consent standards and ensuring that the works were able to serve existing and any potential future development within the catchment area. The works were discharging to the adjacent River Cleen and were found to be unable to meet the EC Municipal Wastewater Treatment and the NI Environment Agency standard of 20mg/l BOD, 30mg/l s/s and 7.5mg/l for the expanding population of Fivemiletown.

The Full Life Cost Analysis indicated that construction of a replacement Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) plant on the site of the existing works and then pumping the effluent to the River Colebrooke would be the most cost effective solution. Doran Consulting was subsequently commissioned to design a new works to improve the quality of the effluent and to increase the treatment capacity for a design population equivalent of 2,200.

The new scheme included the construction of a new inlet works, two new Primary Settlement Tanks, four RBCs, two new Final Settlement Tanks, storm storage tanks, and the provision of a final effluent pumping station to pump 3km to the Colebrook River.

The construction works were phased to ensure that the quality of the treatment was not compromised during the contract period and on completion of the new works, the old process units were demolished.
