Antrim Area Hospital Accident & Emergency
Doran Consulting has a long history of providing design services for the Antrim Area Hospital, having provided a range of design and site supervision services on the original construction project for this 300-bed acute facility (click here for more information).
We were pleased to have been commissioned to provide civil and structural design services for the hospital’s new flagship Accident & Emergency Department which opened in 2013. The new department houses some of the most modern and technologically advanced emergency facilities in Northern Ireland and is more than twice the size of the old department, with the capacity to facilitate up to 90,000 attendances per year.
The new department is set out over 3 levels and includes a records department, a full Emergency Department, 24-bed ward unit, minor and major injuries units, triage, examination rooms and a range of ancillary supporting areas. The building was designed with a reinforced concrete frame, with a steel frame for the upper floor and a lightweight roof.
Access on all levels between the new-build department and the main hospital had to be incorporated into the design and construction to provide direct routes for staff and patients, without disrupting existing services, which had to remain available throughout the period of works. The new facility was completed in an extremely tight timeframe of just 15 months.
