Doran Consulting is pleased to announce that Rickard Hulten has won the Brennan Cup, the regional heat of the ICE Emerging Engineers Award with his paper titled ‘Green Port Hull, Design of East Lead-In Jetty’.  Rickard, a Graduate Engineer and a member of our bridge and marine section, will now be recommended for entry to the national final of the competition.

Green Port Hull is a major development of Alexandra Dock in Hull to create the UK’s largest manufacturing, assembly and servicing facility for offshore wind turbines. Doran Consulting undertook the role as Designer for a Joint venture between Graham and Lagan Construction who were awarded the £100M contract for the Marine Works Package. Rickard's paper focused on the design on one of the key structures on this project, the East Lead-In Jetty (ELIJ).

The ELIJ is required to facilitate approach to Alexandra Dock during both the Construction and Operational stage of the project. The final layout of the ELIJ consisted of 3 No. dolphin structures each formed of a 2 to 2.5m deep reinforced concrete deck cast on top of 1420mm diameter steel tubular piles.

The design of the Lead-in jetty was technically challenging and included aspects of both geotechnical and structural engineering design. Rickard paper also highlighted his involvement in the temporary works design, innovative fender connection and consideration of health and safety throughout the design.

Rickard said: “This has been a very interesting and challenging project to work on. The experience has helped to develop my engineering knowledge and I look forward to working on large scale marine projects in the future.”
