Year Out Placement Student (Process - Water & Wastewater Treatment )

We are currently accepting applications for a Year Out Placement Student to work in our dynamic Public Health Process Engineering Team, commencing Summer 2024.  Our process engineers carry out process assessment and process designs for water and wastewater treatment plants.

Tasks for the Process Team generally involve:

·       Water treatment:  assessment of chemical raw water characteristics and variation; through a knowledge of chemical and physical treatment processes carry out identification of suitable treatment processes to meet regulatory requirements for drinking water; preparation of process layouts, sizing of process units including tanks, chemical storage tanks and dosing equipment, all the pumps, compressors, air receiving tanks and proprietary process units etc required to operate the plant; means to identify, quantify and manage by-products including water recovery tanks, filters etc, sludge treatment equipment, for example, plate presses.  Hydraulic design is often included in the process design and advice to the MEICA engineers is usually required to identify suitable critical control points.

·       Wastewater treatment: assessment of influent flow and chemical loadings and variations and required effluent quality; through a knowledge of biological, chemical and physical treatment processes carry out identification of suitable and cost effective treatment processes; preparation of process layouts, sizing of process units including tanks, chemical storage tanks and dosing equipment, pumps, blowers, diffusers, filters etc required to operate the plant; means to identify, quantify and manage by-products including sludge storage, and sludge treatment, for example, sludge thickeners.  Hydraulic design is often included in the process design and advice to the MEICA engineers is usually required to identify suitable critical control points.

Along with other members of the process team, placement process engineers/scientists may also be involved in other areas of related work including: water sampling, organising chemical analysis, interpretation and reports for environmental monitoring; development work for novel processes; hydraulic design, pump selection; process related management of other processes (for example, food and beverage, landfill leachate etc).

Applications are encouraged from self-motivated individuals who are flexible, have strong communication skills and a keen desire to learn.
