St Josephs Secondary School, Creggan, Derry

This project consisted of the phased replacement of a secondary school within its existing site boundary. The new school consisted of four 2-storey reinforced concrete framed classroom blocks, three single storey steel framed blocks housing a technology suite, assembly hall, gymnasium, music suite and school meals accommodation. Our brief  from CCMS also included the refurbishment of an existing hard porous pitch and the construction of a new sand mattress pitch.

Phases 2 & 3 of the contract were both handed over to the client four months ahead of the original 16 month programme. The external works were completed six months ahead of schedule.

The acceleration of the contract programme was in no small part due to the buildability of the structural frame, with its emphasis on an efficient combination of simplified in-situ works and standardised detailing of elements which were then precast/ fabricated off site. Effective collaboration between the respective members of the design team and with the contractor on site also contributed to the early delivery of the school buildings to the client.
