Castlederg WwTW, Co. Tyrone

This NI Water scheme was designed by Doran Consulting for the BSG/ WIS JV to replace the old Wastewater Treatment Works at Castlederg with a new works designed for a population equivalent of 5,000 to upcoming regulatory discharge standards in compliance with the EC Directive Municipal Wastewater Treatment.

The preliminary processes consisted of a "Huber" inlet RO5 package screen fitted with grit and grease removal systems. The main treatment process was the first of its kind to be installed in the British Isles and consisted of two Sequential Batch Reactor basins with integrated Surge Anoxic Mix (ISAM) tanks for integrated anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic processes for sewage treatment and sludge management.

This system gives a form of treatment that has a reduced footprint and has therefore has no requirement for separate sludge handling. The production of waste solids can be reduced by up to 65% for the entire secondary process. The old works, which remained operational during construction, have since been demolished.
