Greenisland WwTW, Co. Antrim

The Doran Consulting/ BSG/ WIS JV successfully completed this Compact Aeration Wastewater Treatment Works located on vacant land adjacent to the existing Greenisland WwTW site at Greenisland, Co Antrim situated on the seaward side of the A2 Shore Road from Carrickfergus to Belfast on the shores of Belfast Lough. This Design and Construct contract, for DRD Water Service (NI), was undertaken under IChemE Conditions with the new plant increasing the treatment capacity of the works to a design population equivalent of 14,000 pe, giving a treated flow of 9,500 m³/d.

During this project the existing percolating filter works was kept in service until the new works became available, when all flows were then diverted to the new plant.

The design of the new works was based on a Compact Aeration System which included the following process elements:

Inlet flow splitting, control, and measurement
Inlet screens with by-pass
Grit removal and classification with by-pass
Twin stream biological aeration tanks with integral final settlement tanks
Storm water retention tank
Sludge thickening plant and thickened sludge holding tank
Control building to house switchgear, air blowers and process control instrumentation
