Fintona WwTW

Fintona Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) is situated on the northern outskirts of the town of Fintona in County Tyrone, approximately 12km south of Omagh. Doran Consulting originally undertook an Appraisal Study of the original 1970s works and found that it was unable to meet Urban Waste Water Treatment Regulations (NI) 1995 and the contemporaneous discharge standards set by the NI Environment Agency for the expanding population of Fintona. A 'Full Life Cost Analysis' indicated that a replacement Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) plant on the site of the existing works would be the most cost effective solution. Doran Consulting was subsequently commissioned to design a new works to improve the quality of the effluent discharged to the Quiggery Water River and to increase the treatment capacity for a design population equivalent of 1,600.

The scheme involved the demolition of the existing two percolating filters, a primary settlement tank and two final settlement tanks. The new works incorporated the construction of a new inlet works, 3 new Primary Settlement Tanks, 6 RBCs, 3 new Final Settlement Tanks and the provision of storm storage and a new sludge holding tank. A new Control Building was provided for process controls, equipment and sanitary provision for visiting operators.

The construction works were phased to ensure that the quality of the treatment was not compromised during the contract period.
