Portaferry WwTW, Co. Down

This NI Water contract was undertaken by Doran Consulting as part of the BSG/ WIS JV to provide a first time Wastewater Treatment Works in Portaferry for a population of 5,300 and to meet the requirements of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Regulations (NI) 1995 and water quality standards set by the Environment Agency of 5mg/l BoD, 15mg/l s/s.

The new treatment works included an inlet works, sludge holding and thickening facilities, odour control, two final settlement tanks, tertiary treatment, a control building for process controls, and a skip building adjacent to the inlet works.

To increase its storage capacity and effectiveness, the existing Terminal Pumping Station situated on the Quayside was upgraded and now transfers flows to the new Treatment facility via a new 1.7km long pumping main. A secant piled wall was constructed around the perimeter for the new wet well and the old pumping station continued to operate during the phased demolition and construction of the new upgraded pumping station.
