Ballymote Community and Sports Centre, Downpatrick

Doran Consulting was appointed to undertake the civil and structural engineering design services for this project which involved the construction of a new-build sports centre complete with sports hall, boxing arena and fitness suite, and the refurbishment and extension of an existing community centre. Both projects were located on neighbouring sites.

The sports centre was constructed from a braced steel frame which is in turn supported off driven precast piled foundations. Clear span steel feature trusses were adopted for the roof structure over the sports hall with decorative tension bracing used behind the sections of glazed curtain walling.

A steel framed glazed lantern supported on a framework of cranked steel beams was incorporated over the boxing arena to provide enhanced natural lighting. Externally a perimeter foul and storm drainage system was provided along with the asphalt access roads and car parking facilities.
