Valley Leisure Centre Refurbishment, Newtownabbey

The roof of this building has a clear span of 60m x 100m with no internal supports and is one of the largest clear-span public buildings in Ireland. The triangulated tubular steel roof trusses presented many challenges related to size, fabrication, transport and erection. This has proved a very successful structure giving great flexibility for change to the interior of the building, which is quite independent of the external envelope.

To put some scale on the Valley Leisure Centre, the external envelope of the building would accommodate about 10,000 seated spectators around a central performance space, in an enclosure entirely free of internal supports.

The building received a Structural Steel Industry Commendation. Awards were also received for papers presented describing this structure.
